Randomly picked this place because I was running an errand in the neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the vegetarian steamed dumplings and the cucumber salad. Once I ordered, they brought a couple small dishes, one of a cabbage salad and one of boiled peanuts. Both were agreeable. (They would have brought tea, but it was the heat wave so I had ice water instead.) The cucumber salad was huge. And intensely vinegary. 5 stars! I couldn't finish it and brought the rest home. It was hard to tell because the ingredients were minced, but I think the dumplings were a mix of cabbage and mushrooms with a bit of carrot. Don't quote me, it's only a guess. But they were good, held together well as I took them out of the wooden steamer, weren't overly doughy, and went well with the two vinegars on the table (yes, I like vinegar, if you don't there is also soy sauce). The serving was huge. Low 4 stars. Service was pleasant. The place is nothing fancy. I wouldn't make a special trip for this place but I would definitely eat here again.

Came here for lunch but didn't end up getting any of the lunch specials. Whenever I go to a new Chinese restaurant, I like to get the beef chow fun (one of my favorites) as a benchmark. I also got the wontons in chili oil because they have a minimum $25 for credit card. The chow fun was pretty decent but I've had better in the neighborhood. The wontons in chili oil was really good. They use a sesame sauce based sauce. Portions are large, which is great.

Amazing authentic North China cuisine at its best in San Francisco. Easy to find parking and location. Plenty of indoor sitting. All the dishes were well balanced with bold flavors, and super fresh. We ordered P02 Numb and Spicy stew with all veggies, M17 home style with homemade sauce, and V02 braised eggplant. Meat was perfectly crispy on outside and very tender and juicy on the inside. I had food in the North of China and this hits home in terms of cooking style and quality. Definitely will come back again.

China North Dumpling is an unpretentious, but very authentic restaurant for Northern Chinese food. Your dine-in experience always starts off with an attentive and friendly server bringing you complementary peanuts and pickled spicy cabbage, along with a pot of piping hot tea. While perusing the menu and/or the photo examples on the wall, you might also catch a glimpse of the ladies rolling out house made dough for their tasty green onion pancakes or their many varieties of dumplings, which can be ordered steamed, pan fried, or frozen. Our food recommendations include: - Northern Style Homemade Colorful Mixed (a savory cold salad of green bean skin, pork, slivered scrambled eggs, wood ear mushrooms, and assorted colorful vegetables) - green onion pancakes - red oil wonton - pan-fried dumplings (recent favorite is shrimp, pork, and scrambled eggs, and chives or pork and Napa cabbage) - fish with flaming chili oil - fish with silken tofu (if spicy isn't your thing) - bitter melon with scrambled eggs (you need to have passed a certain threshold to appreciate this dish) Even though it is a no-frills restaurant, with the typical ambiance of many Chinese restaurants, with multiple conversations going on at once, it is not obtrusive. Additionally, the food here consistently meets a high standard and is one of our favorite go-to spots for comfort food.

We had a great lunch at China North Dumpling. Xiao long bao done right. Juicy and didn't break apart when you picked it up. Also liked the chive boxes. Looked like a hand pie but filled with egg and chives We also ordered potstickers, pork and corn dumplings, Shanghai nian gao and Shanghai chow mein. Noodles are handmade. Very good lunch and prices are decent. Place is also spacious and clean. Service was prompt and no frills.

Great food! Everything was perfectly made and they have pretty big portions. There are pictures of the food on the walls that can help with choosing your options

Nice, clean, well-lit restaurant serving traditional XLBs, Stir Fried Lotus Roots, Pan Fried Beef Buns, and Bean Curd & Veggies Light Mustard Salad, the latter is not made at too many places due to the prep time it takes to set up the dish. Very good service and we always get the Bean Curd Salad...

Finally tried this place. If we are in the neighborhood we typically go to cafe bakery, but now have options. Came in around 2pm on a Sunday and it was almost full. Service was friendly and food came out timely. Everything we ordered was delicious enough to make us want to go back the next day and dream about the xlb until then.

I celebrated the eve of the Lunar New Year at this restaurant. Reservations are available to avoid queuing. However, we were warned that food would take longer, and it took almost 30 minutes for some dishes to arrive. We ordered a variety of dishes, starting with Braised Tofu with Fish, a great option for non-spicy eaters, which came with mushrooms and bok choy. We didn't touch the vegetable dish that followed, Mushrooms and Bok Choy, as it was similar to the accompaniments in the braised tofu and fish. The Shanghai Style Chow Mein was a hit, with big, chewy noodles mixed with vegetables and pork. The Beef Sizzling Plate, which arrived last, came hot and covered with a foil, but still be cautious to avoid splashing oil. While listed as spicy, the dish was more savory, with a generous amount of black pepper. I also took home Frozen Dumplings for the next day. Bags come with 20 pieces and cash only. Order the Fish and Chive, which was disappointing. The dumpling barely had any filling. The fish was cut in large chunks, so almost all the dumplings were mostly chives, and if you were lucky, to find some fish. The Lamb and Zucchini was a hit with a great meat ratio and juicy. Overall, we would return, but skip the veggie dish and Fish and Chive Dumplings next time.

This review is for pick-up. Recently moved to the neighborhood and trying to try the places close by. We ordered the garlic chow mein w handmade noodles, house special beef pancakes, sesame chicken, and pork + corn pan fried dumplings. My order was 5 mins early and still piping hot when I got there. The portions are LARGE, I think there are multiple meals in the sesame chicken. Garlic chow mein was delicious and the handmade noodles had the perfect amount of chew and just a bit of char. The sesame chicken was crispy and good chunks of meat, huge portion - sesame sauce was not overly sweet. The pan fried were great, though I'd probably do corn and chicken next time. The house pancakes were insane, bursting with flavor and juices. Definitely will be coming back!
